Joel Wertheimer

Joel Wertheimer is a founding partner of Wertheimer Fleder LLP. He brings a deep background in civil rights and complex litigation, shaped by years of experience in both private practice and public service. Joel represents clients in matters involving wrongful conviction, police misconduct, prosecutorial abuse, and constitutional violations.

Before founding the firm, Joel practiced at Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP and Winston & Strawn LLP, where he focused on commercial litigation, arbitration, and antitrust matters. He later clerked for the Hon. Lorna G. Schofield of the Southern District of New York. In 2015, Joel entered government service, working in the West Wing as Associate Staff Secretary under President Obama, then as Staff Secretary to Governor Cuomo.

Following his time in government, Joel joined the David B. Shanies Law Office, where he handled civil rights cases across a wide range of issues, including wrongful death and prisoner rights. He brings sharp legal strategy and unwavering advocacy to every case he handles.
